How long can a cavity wait?

I had a really bad toothache last month and had to go to an emergency dental clinic where I got a huge filling. When I was there, they said I had another 4 cavities needing filled, but they couldn't do it because they only treated emergency cases.

I'm a student at the minute, but start working in August and until then, can't afford to get the work done privately. Do you think it's OK to just leave these cavities until, say, September when I'll have some money? Of the four cavities, only one is causing me any problems at the minute, and it's not too bad, just occasional pain with sweet things. The others give me no problems at all.

How long can a cavity wait?
I'm a registered dental hygienist and there is no way to tell how long a person can hold out w/ getting a filling. I would say if you don't see holes in your teeth when you look in the mirror, you can probally wait til september as long as u are brushing twice a day, everyday, and stay away from cigarettes and Mountain Dew. If u see holes in your teeth, I would get it done ASAP, before u wake up w/ a tooth ache on a Sunday morning or a Holiday when noone is at the office. FYI- If u ever get a toothache DO NOT LAY DOWN. Your blood will rush to your head and cause the tooth to ache even more!!! Good Luck
Reply:Hey, if you can handle the pain, you go ahead and wait!
Reply:i wouldn't wait too much longer. they can get worse pretty quickly and you dont want them to do a root canal, let alone 4.
Reply:Well as long as they aren't causeing you pain you can wait. I understand you can't afford to go now. Try using ACT mouth rinse. That helps cut down on cavities and can stop them from getting worse.
Reply:I had the same problem. I waited 6 months (nov-march). I'm sure it will all be ok but the sooner you have it done the less sensitive the tooth will be when you have the filling.
Reply:Common sense will tell you when the pain is unbearable, you will seek dental help, regardless of your financial situation.

They won't stop hurting, and you do more damage to the tooth by chewing as time goes by, and could need a root canal (not fun) or even an extraction (ouch!).

You will know when you need to take care of this malady.

Best wishes!
Reply:Try PEROXYL mouth rinse. Not overly pleasant but doable.

Also salt water rinses daily after meals %26amp; snacks; Lots of water to keep toxins from accumulating in your system. I am a dental technician who has learned much while creating crowns %26amp; Bridges for patients. You can also find temporary filling material at he local drugstore to help with extreme sensitivty. Try calling small town dentists to see if they can put you on a payment plan. Temporary fillings(medicated) can also be an answer-talk to your dentist. I once had one last for two years. Best wishes %26amp; better health to you!
Reply:By the time the tooth gets painful you are probably going to need a root canal. It's impossible to tell if it can wait until September. If it is a very small cavity then it's possible... if it's large, probably not. Just remember that the cavity will continue to grow until you have it taken care of and could possibly reach the nerve of your tooth
