I had one filling on NHS cost £43.60 How much private?

I luckily found an NHS dentist but recently had a filling., just the one , took about 15 minutes. How is the price of £43.60 justified? We do have an emergency dental clinic here which charges £15.20 if it is an extraction or filling. How can the NHS charge that amount and what would it have cost privately?

They've changed it fairly recently so that there are three different bands of payment - the first one is around £15 and includes things like cleanings, check-ups and routine x-rays. If you need any fillings, you go into the second band which is £43 - it doesn't matter whether you need 1 filling or 5 fillings, you'll still pay the same. And then the third price bracket is about £125 and that's if you need things like root canals, crowns, bridges etc.

If you'd gone private, the initial consultation and check-up with x-rays would have cost you around £45 minimum. Then for the filling, depending on the size, you'd be looking at between about £75 and £150.
Reply:Even tho it is a NHS dentist sometimes you have to pay private, because they cant get the funding, thats the same with my dentist its NHS (ie) free for thos under 16 and on benifits, but every day people such as me and you have to pay private prices !!
Reply:Holey moely that's expensive. I had 2 amalgum fillings and one composite done last year on the NHS, and I paid £33 for the lost. You have been ripped off by the sound of it.
Reply:That sounds like a private dentists charges for certain! NHS is usually between 7 - 15 pounds.
Reply:there should be a poster up in the reception telling you the three price bands.1 is £15.20. 2 is £43.60, 3 is £100+,depending on the work.my wife just had a clean,2 fillings and a crown stuck back on for £43.60 !
Reply:The moment you see the dentist, in a private practise, the consultation begins, the moment he peers into your mouth the fees have doubled.

He put fingers or instruments into your mouth fees have trebled.

If there are x-rays to be taken additional fees.

Should you have treatment eg a filling you would be lucky to see any change out of £250.00 at least.
Reply:Yes, Ł15.90 is for emergency dental treatment (extraction up to 2 teeth,

1 permanent filling etc.), or for initial dental examination, x-rays, teeth cleaning. It is called Band 1. Fillings - no matter, how many - raise up the price to Ł43.60, which is Band 2. If any crowns, bridges, dentures are needed, this is Band 3 - about Ł190, I don't remeber how much exactly.

The above are the NHS fees.
